Elgar’s Musical Riddle
The strings of the HSO are featured in Belá Bartók’s Divertimento, which displays the composer’s uniquely Hungarian take on neoclassical modernism, and we hear the first piano concerto of Sergei Rachmaninoff, completed around the composer’s eighteenth birthday, played by rising star Ying Li. Sir Edward Elgar’s beloved masterpiece, the Enigma Variations, a musical portrait of the composers dear friends, and a set of variations with an enigmatic (and unheard) theme.
Performer Highlights
Ying Li
Ying Li is a Chinese pianist whose international career has quickly gained attention through major competition wins, orchestral appearances, and recital debuts on prominent stages. A winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and the inaugural Antonio Mormone International Prize, Li has performed across the United States and Europe, bringing clarity, energy, and expressive depth to a wide-ranging repertoire.
- Has appeared with leading ensembles including The Philadelphia Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Filarmonica della Scala, and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic.
- Recital appearances include Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater.
- Trained at the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School.
